Vern has already introduced club members to WhatsApp.This social networking application can be a great way to keep in touch when we are away from Point Roberts and can’t chat on the docks. Vern sent out an invite for the “All MembersGroup” PRYCGroupCom and summarized some of the rules and etiquette for navigating it.Many of you have already responded to his invitation to join.
We currently have several WhatsApp groups, each witha different focus. To join a group, email the host.
PRYCGroupCom. Hosted by Vern ([email protected]) This group is open to all PRYC members.
Port Browning. Hosted by Mike Broser ([email protected]) This group is used by members who have their boats on the Pender Islands and has been active since fall 2020.
Desolation Sound. A new group, hosted by Carmen Jackson ([email protected]) If you are making plans to head that way this summer, join the group and share itineraries.
If you want to host a new WhatsApp group to focuson another area/topic of interest to boating members, set it up and send the webmaster a brief description of the group.
Tips for successful WhatsApp groups (Rules and Etiquette)
●Treat everyone with respect and kindness
●Colourful language is a hallmark of sailors and seafolkbut please use only language you’d be comfortable using face to face in a social setting.
●No racial, religious, culturally intolerant or sexist language and no harassment.
●No messages about politics, religion, sex or your grandchildrens’ latest achievements.
●Keep messages brief and related to the purpose of the group
●Don’t feel you have to reply to every message.
●If you disagree with a post, do so in a respectful way.
●When posting photos, be mindful that those receiving them may not be in wifi coverage and may be using their data plans to view your pictures.
●You can post boating related items for sale or trade with fellow club members but do not post any other items. We have zero tolerance for any scam, spam or phishing posts.
●While you may use WhatsApp to ask if a fellow boater has a spare part or tool you need, please remember it is not an emergency communication system. If you are in danger, use your VHF or call emergency services on your cellphone.
●Please do not post copyrighted material.
While PRYC encourages you to share your plans and destinations, this is in no way to be considered that the Club is encouraging group travel at this time or non-compliance with travel restrictions and/or other health authority regulations. If you happen to arrive at any location at the same time as another member please follow all rules in place at the time.
