WhatsApp(?)
Back around 2018 we tried playing around with using WhatsApp to keep in touch when we are away from Point Roberts and can’t chat on the docks. We experienced limited success, but ultimately gaps in cell coverage at that time made kept us from adopting it and gaining critical mass; we were ahead of the curve.
Enter 2025. We are doing a restart; the old groups have been purged and people will need to make contact with Val Penny to be added to the group. To join in, simply email her at [email protected], or text her at (236) 868-1644 to ask to join.
The intent of this group is to let other Club members know when and where you might be heading out, so people can rendezvous. We encourage people to make a point of letting folks know when & where you're heading off; it's always nice to connect with fellow members.
Tips for successful WhatsApp groups (Rules and Etiquette)
●Treat everyone with respect and kindness
●Colourful language is a hallmark of sailors and sea-folk but please use only language you’d be comfortable using face to face in a social setting.
●No racial, religious, culturally intolerant or sexist language and no harassment.
●No messages about politics, religion, sex or your grandchildrens’ latest achievements.
●Keep messages brief and related to the purpose of the group
●Don’t feel you have to reply to every message.
●If you disagree with a post, do so in a respectful way.
●When posting photos, be mindful that those receiving them may not be in wifi coverage and may be using their data plans to view your pictures.
●You can post boating related items for sale or trade with fellow club members but do not post any other items. We have zero tolerance for any scam, spam or phishing posts.
●While you may use WhatsApp to ask if a fellow boater has a spare part or tool you need, please remember it is not an emergency communication system. If you are in danger, use your VHF or call emergency services on your cellphone.
●Please do not post copyrighted material.
